Spatial controls on riverbed sediment chemistry in three anthropogenically modified tropical mountainous watersheds

چکیده
Tropical mountainous rivers transport a disproportionate amount of sediment to the global ocean. While these systems also deliver sediment-related pollutants (i.e., metals) coast, potential accumulation metal contaminants within has been largely unexplored. This study analyzed trace concentrations fine riverbed (< 0.63 µm) collected from Rio Loco, Yauco and Guamaní in Puerto Rico. A total 17 samples were June 2019 (~ 21 months following Hurricane Maria) watersheds. Metal (Al, Ba, Cd, Cu, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Sb, Sn, U Zn) quantified with acid digestion inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Strong positive correlations found between Pb, Sb Sn (ravg > 0.60, p < 0.05) as well Cr Ni 0.81, 0.05). comparison land cover revealed statistical relationships Zn developed agricultural land. Between 7 50% exhibited enrichment factor values indicative moderate significant levels contamination (EF 2) for each metal. Additionally, several exceeded consensus-based threshold effect probable values. Altogether, data confirm that metals do accumulate tropical watersheds can be at impact freshwater ecosystems. These elevated periodic flushing events, regularly supported by hurricanes, suggest threat nearshore ecosystems such coral reefs.

Influences of Land Use Change on Baseflow in Mountainous Watersheds
It is crucial for effective water resource management in a watershed that the relationship between land use changes and baseflow. This study quantifies the influence of land use changes on the baseflow dynamics using a hydrological model and partial least-squares (PLS) regression in the Upper Du Watershed (8961 km2), China. Our study suggests that forest can be a major factor with a negative im...
متن کاملControls on Arsenic Mobility in Contaminated Wetland and Riverbed Sediments
Arsenic mobility and transport in the environment are strongly influenced by associations with solid phases. This dissertation investigates the mechanisms affecting arsenic retention in contaminated wetland and riverbed sediments. A sequential extraction procedure was designed and tested to differentiate solid phase arsenic speciation, including adsorbed As and As coprecipitated with amorphous ...
متن کاملControls of Sediment Nitrogen Dynamics in Tropical Coastal Lagoons.
Sediment denitrification rates seem to be lower in tropical environments than in temperate environments. Using the isotope pairing technique, we measured actual denitrification rates in the sediment of tropical coastal lagoons. To explain the low denitrification rates observed at all study sites (<5 μmol N2 m-2 h-1), we also evaluated potential oxygen (O2) consumption, potential nitrification, ...

douala metropolitan city loated in the littoral province of cameroon, has experienced a rapid urbaniation and industralisation. the city depends heavily on groundwater as a resource. due to ubiquitous sources of pollution, groundwater quality and contamination has become an imprtant issue for this urban groundwater supply. this study uses the major ion chemistry of groundwater together with t...
متن کاملAn Artificial Neural Network model for mountainous water-resources management: The case of Cyprus mountainous watersheds
This is a preliminary attempt towards a wider use of Artificial Neural Networks in the management of mountainous water supplies. It proposes a model to be used effectively in the estimation of the average annual water supply, in each mountainous watershed of Cyprus. This is really a crucial task, especially during the long dry summer months of the island. On the other hand the evaluation of the...
